This is a list of items minimalist can benefit from and why we use them.

Even though I am a minimalist there are a few things I think are beneficial for this lifestyle choice. I am sure people’s opinions are different but after almost 3 years of living a minimalist life these are a few things that I think are useful.

Simplified wardrobe.

Courtney Carver’s Project 333 is a great place to start. This challenge is basically picking 33 pieces of clothing to wear for 3 months. There are several rules that you can check out at her site bemorewithless.com I love this idea because this challenge helps you create a wardrobe with pieces that can be mixed and matched to make many outfits. She also includes a list of what made the cut for her closet!

Online banking/billing.

Going paperless is obviously a great idea for a minimalist to create less paper clutter. This is also a good way to help the environment by saving trees. It’s a win-win for many reasons. Also scanning receipts or other items onto your computer is a great idea to save space on storing paper items. If you are looking for advice on getting your finances on better track I would suggest Dave Ramsey. He has great ideas on budgeting, saving, investing and more. I highly recommend his book The Total Money Makeover. If you can apply his principles it will turn around your financial situation.

1 in 1 out rule.

At our house we use the 1 in 1 out rule. This simply means if we bring something new into the house, we get rid of something. This is not only useful in maintaining our minimalist lifestyle but also there is just not much room in an RV to store items. This rule can be adjusted to whatever works for you and your family. However I highly recommend having some kind of guidelines so that once you purge you are able to maintain.

Amazon Prime.

This may sounds like a silly item to make the list but here is why! Amazon prime allows you to purchase and download movies and keep them on your account FOREVER. Virtually this is just a way to get rid of DVDs and store your movies online. We love to watch movies but hate to store them. This is a great way to not give up movies and still not have to store them. Plus there are other perks with having amazon prime such as free shipping on a ton of items.

Kindle for e-books.

I really enjoy to read but again do not want to store a ton of books. This makes it easy to keep collecting a library but electronically. I have been interested in this ever since we decided we wanted to live on a sailboat because I knew that realistically books take up too much space and shouldn’t be taken. I also think this will help me in the future with homeschool books. We shall see!

Vision Board.

I love visions boards because it’s a fun way to represent your goals. A vision board is basically a visual of things that you want to accomplish. It’s a visual board of goals you have for your career, family, future, and so on. You can use words, pictures, charts, or whatever you feel represents your goals. Some people like to make these boards at the beginning of each year to have a plan of goals to reach.

Bucket List.

Similar to a vision board but different. What are you going to do with your intentional simple life? Now that you hopefully have more time for what you enjoy and dream about what do you want to do? Making a fun bucket lists of things you always wanted to do and then making a plan to get there is a great and fun way to use your new found free time as a minimalist.

What things do you feel a minimalist should have? Anything you would add or take away? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
